Space Your Study Sessions
Instead of cramming the night before, spread your revision across multiple shorter sessions over days or weeks. Spaced repetition dramatically improves long-term retention of biological concepts.
Understand, Don't Memorise
WACE ATAR subjects reward deep understanding. Focus on the "why" behind each process — if you understand the mechanism, you can reason your way through an unfamiliar question rather than hoping you have seen it before.
Master Extended Response Questions
Extended responses are where marks are won and lost. Practise structuring answers with clear scientific terminology, logical flow, and explicit links to the question. Use past WACE papers regularly.
Active Recall Over Re-reading
Close your notes and try to recall key concepts from memory. Use flashcards, practice questions, or teach the content to someone else. Active recall is far more effective than passive re-reading.
Target the Syllabus Dot Points
The WACE syllabus dot points are your exam blueprint. Go through each one and ensure you can fully explain it. If you can't, that's a gap to address — not something to skip.
Review Marked Work Carefully
When you get assignments or practice exams back, don't just look at the grade. Study the marking key, understand exactly where you lost marks, and practise those specific areas until they're solid.
